PULSE//ZERO

OUT NOW: PULSE//ZERO v0.5.0: EVOLUTION

v0.5.0 is out. Every run now picks a Combat Profile and a Sector that rewrite the rules of the arena — backed by eleven new enemies, four Elite variants and two new bosses.

PULSE//ZERO v0.5.0 — EVOLUTION is out. DISTORTION made the systems talk to each other. This one makes them roll differently every time you press play.

The headline is that a run now has conditions. Before the first enemy arrives, the Run Director picks a Combat Profile — the run’s personality — and a Sector that bends the rules of the whole arena. Pursuit hunts you. Fortress digs in. Overclock speeds everything up; Blackout dims your sight; Endless Pulse floods you with charge. You feel which run you’re in within thirty seconds, and you’ll play it differently.

Enemies that are decisions, not bodies

Eleven new enemies arrive with the profiles, and the point of each one is that it changes what you should be doing:

  • a shield projector makes its neighbours hard to kill, so it goes first
  • a gravity anchor rewrites where you can safely stand
  • a signal jammer scrambles your score readout
  • a turret constructor turns open ground into emplacements if you leave it alone
  • a corruptor keeps making more of the problem

Two gravity anchors hold open funnels of warped cyan grid lines while a turret constructor, artillery and a repair drone close in around the player ship

Those two funnels of pulled grid are gravity anchors. They have not fired a shot — they have just made most of the arena somewhere you would rather not be.

On top of that, any of them can spawn as an Elite — Veteran, Corrupted, Volatile or Phase-Shifted — and two new bosses join the roster.

SIGNAL WARDEN locks the arena down behind firewalls and deploys its own support. Break the shield nodes, then the core.

The SIGNAL WARDEN boss, a heavy amber fortification core ringed by rotating barrier segments, buckling the grid around itself as the player ship holds position below

HIVE QUEEN never holds still. She circles, spawns, and drowns the field in her brood — burst her brood-sacs to expose the birthing core.

The HIVE QUEEN boss, a green brood-core with glowing egg-pods, spitting a stream of small yellow brood toward the player ship

The thing that made it work

Some build-in-public honesty: this update only lands because of blunt feedback on an earlier build. People told us it was too visually busy to read — that the neon was winning and the gameplay was losing.

That readability work is exactly why “every run rewrites the rules” reads as variety now instead of noise. If the screen were still hard to parse, six Sectors and eleven new enemies would have been six new ways to be confused. So: thank you, genuinely, to everyone who said so plainly.

We kept applying it here. Every new enemy has its own silhouette rather than relying on colour, every telegraph and danger radius survives the busiest frame, and the menus got a pass of their own.

Scores now carry their conditions

Because the Director rolls different rules each run, a score means more when you can see what it was set under. Every EVOLUTION run records its Combat Profile and Sector, and the leaderboard can filter by them — so “who has the best Corruption run” is a question you can actually ask, not just “who has the best run”.

The board itself stays whole. We deliberately did not split it per mutation: the roll you get is part of the arcade, and mastery is making the most of whatever it deals you. The conditions are there so you can read the ranking, not to carve it up.
